Injured in an accident as an Uber or Lyft Driver?

If you were in an accident and your Uber or Lyft app is on, your coverage depends on what period you were in at the time of the accident.

Period 1: Uber or Lyft app is on and the driver is waiting to match with a passenger

This period has the least amount of coverage and only covers the driver if they were at fault for the accident. This is why it is important for drivers to have Rideshare coverage on your own auto insurance policy in case you are in an accident with someone who has insufficient coverage or no coverage at all.

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: Uber and Lyft’s liability coverage has bodily injury limits of $50,000 per person up to $100,000 per incident.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist: Uber or Lyft does not offer this coverage during Period 1. If you are injured by another driver who was uninsured or underinsured at the time of the accident, you will need to pursue your personal Rideshare uninsured/underinsured motorist policy
  • Collision and Comprehensive: No collision or comprehensive during Period 1. Unless you are carrying this coverage on your personal Rideshare policy, you will have to go through the at-fault party’s coverage or you will be responsible for the cost of repairing your vehicle. (Even if you have collision, your insurer may not honor the claim unless you have a Rideshare coverage).

Period 2: The driver is on the way to pick up a matched passenger

  • Bodily injury Liability: Uber and Lyft provides up to $1,000,000 in liability coverage.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist: Uber and Lyft provides their drivers up to $1,000,000 in uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage if the at fault party is uninsured or underinsured.
  • Collision and Comprehensive: Uber and Lyft provides collision coverage to its drivers during this period so long as the driver has collision coverage on their personal auto insurance policy. Uber will step in after the driver’s $1,000 deductible. Lyft will step in after the driver’s $2,500 deductible.

Period 3: This period starts when the driver picks up the matched passenger and ends when the driver ends the ride.

  • Bodily injury Liability: Uber and Lyft provides up to $1,000,000 in liability coverage.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist: Uber or Lyft driver will also have up to $1,000,000 in uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage if the at fault party is insured or underinsured.

It is important to remember that although Uber and Lyft are service providers, their insurance company’s (usually James Rivers or York Risk Services) main objective is to pay you as little as possible. That is why it is important to speak with one of our experienced attorneys to maximize the value of your claim.

We offer FREE consultations 24/7. We do not charge anything up front and only get paid if we are able to win your case.

We can help you with your medical bills, setting you up with medical treatment even if you do not have insurance, recover your lost wages, and get you compensation for your pain and suffering.

Injured in an accident by an Uber or Lyft Driver?
